THE LEGO HOUSE . Listening comprehension 2º Bach.

TIME FOR A SONG🏠💖!!

One of the best things about concerts is that we get to listen to the artist actually talking and sharing their thoughts with the audience, which always come in handy for the English teacher 😛, who  is in the search for new authentic material that may interest their students.
So, here is the deal, listen carefully to the dialogues and comments during this concert. This is a listening activity for general comprehension and specific vocabulary acquisition, so the lyrics are just below in order to check the spelling of some of the expressions.

I'm gonna pick up the pieces
And build a Lego house
When things go wrong we can knock it down
My three words have two meanings
There's one thing on my mind, it's all for you
And it's dark in a cold December, but I've got ya to keep me warm
And if you're broken I'll mend ya
And keep you sheltered from the storm that's raging on now
I'm out of touch, I'm out of love
I'll pick you up when you're getting down
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now
I'm out of sight, I'm out of mind
I'll do it all for you in time
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now
I'm gonna paint you by numbers and color you in
If things go right we can frame it, and put you on a wall
And it's so hard to say it but I've been here before
And I'll surrender up my heart and swap it for yours
I'm out of touch, I'm out of love
I'll pick you up when you're getting down
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now
I'm out of sight, I'm out of mind, I'll do it all for you in time
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now
Don't hold me down
I think my braces are breaking and it's more than I can take
And if it's dark in a cold December, but I've got ya to keep me warm
And if you're broken I'll mend ya
And keep you sheltered from the storm that's raging on now
I'm out of touch, I'm out of love
I'll pick you up when you're getting down
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now
I'm out of sight, I'm out of mind
I'll do it all for you in time
And out of all these things I've done I think I love you better now
I'm out of touch, I'm out of love
I'll pick you up when you're getting down
And out of all these things I've done, I'll love you better now

    1. Taylor said that she loves to come to the England for many reasons, and one of them is that there is a friend of her.

    2. She said "I'm just wondering how you would feel, if I were to tell you, hypothecally; if I were to say that Ed Sheeran is here."
So I think is conditional 2.

    3. Yes, even if most of the time the use of the first person is used, they talk in plural mostly, because are like mutual actions they plan to do to each other.

    4. This song is metaphorical, it is not really talking about Lego. Lego, in this context, represents the breaking of a relationship. While the whole lego house symbolises a sustained relationship. "I'm gonna pick up the pieces and build a lego house, if things wrong we can knock it down". This verse simply means : I am going to mend our relationship by sustaining the broken pieces of our relationship and if things go wrong we can break our relationship.

    5. I'm out of touch, I'm out of love, I'm out of sight, I'm out of mind.
Its means that you don't have something. (in this case, because of love)

    6. Yes, she requested to take a lighter, a flashlight, the mobile phone... to take it up during the song. She said that after she expressed her gratitude to Ed Sheeran, because he went to sing with her in his day off.

  3. 1.What comments do Taylor Swift make at the beginning regarding the audience's effort to attend the concert?
She says that she loves them (the spectators) because they’re incredible supporters. She loves coming for a lot of reasons (seeing them), and also, because one of her best friend is from there (Ed Sheeran).

    2. What conditional sentence does Taylor Swift use to present Ed Sheeran?
Hypothetical (2nd): “I’m just wondering how would you feel, if I were to tell you, hypothetically, if I were to say that Ed Sheeran is here tonight"

    3. According to the song, are the two people involved in the story together? What Expressions give you the clue?
Yes, they are talking about solve problems together and we can see it in some phrases such as “When things go wrong we can knock it down”, “but I've got ya to keep me warm”.
They’re together and they support each other, and, it could be a friendship, but we have some others phrases like “I love you better now” that make us realise that they’re in love.

    4. What words or expressions establish the paralellism between the Lego House and Love?
At the beginning of the song, we can hear:
“I'm gonna pick up the pieces
    And build a Lego house
When things go wrong we can knock it down”
Love is something that must be build piece by piece, just like a lego house (lego house, lego car… you know, but a house could be related to living together, family…).
The “I'm gonna pick up the pieces” means that their relationship had been broken (we can see this also when he says “I love you better now”), but he is going to try to “build it again”, and, if things go wrong, they always can break up, and, I suppose that if this happen, he’ll give up finally.

    5. How many expressions using "out of + noun" could you identify? Could you explain the general meaning of it?
I'm out of touch, I'm out of love, I'm out of sight, I'm out of mind
if you are out of something, you no longer have any of it. I think that in the song, he is out of everything, but he will do everything for her in time.
I mean, he will do everything for her, will love her without anything else, she is the only “thing” he has.

    6. What final request does she have for the audience? Could you identify the exact words?
She requests to take anything that have lights (phone, anything), and to sing with them as loud as they possibly can.

    1) She said that they love a lot them and she loves them because they are incredibly supporters and also because one of their best friend is there.

    2) "If I were to say that Ed Sheeran is here tonight?" It's the second conditional.

    3) Yes, because the song tells us a story between two lovers, specially it focuses on the one that seems to need his/her other half, who can't luve without him/her. "When things go wrong we can knock it down", "I'll do it for you in time", "I think I love you better now".

    4) The song uses as a methaphor to make a "house of lego" in the sense that love is built up little by little, piece by piece, through much effort, dedication and aboveball love on both sides. The key words are " I'm gonna pick up the pieces and build a Lego house when things go wrong we can knock it down".

    5) "I'm out of touch", " I'm out of love", "I'm out of sight". All these expr3ssions are relationated with the love that a person feels for another one.

    6) She requested to the audience to take anything with light, like a mobile phone, because she wants to sing with Ed Sheeran.
