1."chase cinema's tail": To take action that is ineffectual and does not lead to progress. Refers to how a dog can exhaust itself by chasing its own tail.

"career-defining highlights" (A Career Highlights / Qualifications section of a resume is an optional customized section of a resume that lists key achievements, skills, traits, and experience relevant to the position for which you are applying.)... so, it must to be the most outstanding points (in the story-career) of the film or its characters
4."stick with me" To continue or persist in doing, believing, or employing something. (the author goes on the same thing: Infinity War is a mess
5. "standalone film": a film with no sequels or relation with other films
6. "grasp": understand
7."pay off": to yield profits; to result in benefits, or to balance out
8."self-contained episode": Constituting a complete and independent unit in and of itself. Maybe a series has lots of episodes but it doesn't follow a story, or it's only one episode.

1.- ."chase cinema's tail" : It refers about something that will not a great,successful future.
2.-" a poor relation" : That means that something is below about another and don't have so much quality or suceed in relation with the original.
For example, if you see a remarker film of a famous film and it hasn't a good quality or is considered not successful , that's a “poor relation” between the films.
3.-"career-defining highlights” : The most important things or facts that defined something or someone. In this case, can relate with the most important facts that defined the Avenger's saga.
4.- "stick with me" : The person who says that express a wish for you stay by his side.
5.- "standalone film”: A film that don't belongs a saga or have a relation with others films. In other contexts, independent or autonomous.
6.- "grasp" : Hold or support something or someone strongly. Can be mean understand something or someone too.
7.- “pay off”: Return the money for someone that lendded you. Also, means the action to get benefits or results.
8.- "self-contained episode" : A film or TV serie episode that tells a plot that conclude in the same episode. That is to say, the story has a closed final.

2. " a poor relation" is to be considered below.
3. "career-defining highlights", it could be something wich is important to give experience and acknowledgement about a job.
4."stick with me" I just could understand that mean "you'll forgive me for this but... (something to be dissapointed in the author)".
5. "standalone film" an independent film, without other parts.
